Tree 3 - Downy Serviceberry - Amelanchier aborea

This is an Amelanchier arborea located at the Ambler campus of Temple University. It is at the edge of the cold frames by the location of the old greenhouses, across from the red barn.















This is an Amelanchier canadensis (Shadblow Serviceberry) located on the grounds at Andalusia, Pennsylvania.

  • native to northeastern United States down through Florida and across to Iowa

  • a deciduous, small tree or large shrub

Tree 2 - Pink Flowering Dogwood - Cornus Florida - Private Residence

This is a pink flowering dogwood at a private residence in Churchville, Pa. The variety is unknown. It is approximately 25 years old. It has been trimmed at different times due to illness.

Habitat
  • native to the eastern and central United States
  • zone 5 with selection of proper genetic material
  • grows naturally as an understory tree

Habit and Form
  • a small deciduous tree
  • grows to about 30' tall with an equal or greater spread
  • shape is rounded to somewhat flat-topped
  • branching is approaching horizontal
  • branches low to the ground with a short trunk

Tree 1 - Dawn Redwood - Metasequoia glyptostroboides - Private Residence

This is a Dawn Redwood located at a private residence in Churchville, Pennsylvania. The tree was planted 37 years ago and is now taller than the two story home. There are two on the property, each are approximately 65 feet tall.

  • native to China
  • first described from fossil records in 1941
  • live plants were then discovered in the same year
  • seeds were collected in the mid 1940's by the Arnold Arboretum and brought back to the United States

  • horizontal branching
  • typically reaches 75' to 100' tall
